5k a day for a year! · 9 November 2020

We’re Mind, the mental health charity, working across England & Wales. We believe no one should face a mental health problem alone. We’re here for you. Whether you’re stressed, depressed or in crisis. We’ll listen, give support & advice, & fight your corner. Thanks for fundraising for national Mind.

Story

I’ve been thinking a lot for the last six months of different ways I could try and make a bit of a difference, big or small!  What activity or challenge I could do everyday that may bring some small change to something or someone. I mainly want this challenge to be about consistency and showing up to achieve something everyday no matter what.

So I’ve decided to do a 5k a day everyday for a whole year! A total of 1825km over the year, 43.5 Marathons. I will be using Facebook/Strava etc along with the my just giving page and will post my daily 5k with links to donate each day. I’m hoping by embarking on a challenge over 365 days that even the smallest donations will start to add up and the sum at the end of this will make a difference to a worthy cause. I’m hoping to be able to run/ride/walk or crawl (if needed) everyday to get this done! If for some reason I cannot complete the 5k that day I will try add it on to another day and make it 10k. If not then I’ll add that day onto the end of my goal to reach the total 1825km..

I’ve thought long and hard about charities and my go to was Parkinson’s uk, my Grandmother had a long struggle with Parkinson’s and I ran the half marathon a couple of years ago for her to raise some money for this wonderful lesser known charity.

This aside, with the current pandemic I know there are many many people struggling at the moment with their mental health, whether they realise it or not! The detachment from normal life, family and friends is so unsettling and the worry that people are dealing with from the uncertainty of the situation is causing a lot of anxiety and stress whether it be financial, health related, family etc. For this reason I will be donating all money raised over this year to Mind.

I am not a runner and I have only completed one 5k (Yes 1!!) since completing the half marathon 2.5 years ago. So although I can run if I need to, this is going to be really tough. Along the way any help,  donations,  running/riding/walking companions would be amazing and I look forward to you all coming on this journey with me.

Wish me luck!

James
