Story
I have never met anyone who's life has not been touched by cancer at some time or another. Cancer came into my family's life twice. The first time was in 1981 when my mother died of cancer aged just 40, leaving behind 7 children aged from 18 down to 6. I was 16 at the time and the devastation it caused within our family is hard to describe. One thing I remember from that time is that there was no one to talk to. That's just the way it was. We all suffered in silence. We did not even talk to each other about it never mind getting professional help and so it is fantastic to see an organisation like ARC Cancer Support Services filling in that gap.
Cancer visited my family's door again ten years ago when my sister-in-law, Alice was diagnosed with breast cancer, also aged just 40 but thankfully she managed to beat it and now ten years on is getting on with her life and is doing great. Alice used ARC Cancer Support Services at the time and found them to be a great help to her to deal with all that is involved in such a devastating diagnosis and the grueling treatment that follows. Also the help that was available to her family and carers during this time was invaluable.
This is why I have chosen ARC Cancer Support as the charity to represent as I take on this huge challenge (huge for me as I'm now 50 and not particularly fit for most of my life thus far).
The 700km Paris2Nice cycle takes place over 6 days. It is an epic challenge and a real physical test so training has begun in earnest! Importantly, all of the cyclists are funding the full cost of their participation themselves so every cent collected will go to the charities.
