Story
On Saturday 13th June 2015 I will be running ... walking... crawling the Norfolk 100 KM (62 miles).
In May 2011 my eldest son Stanley was diagnosed with Autism (ASD), Global Developmental Delay and more recently Sensory Processing Disorder.
It's a known fact that children/young adults face daily barriers that make it more difficult for them to achieve their full potential in life. Parents and carers struggle because they feel isolated, lonely, under pressure and unable to cope. Families in Great Yarmouth and surrounding towns are disadvantaged as we live in a very deprived area with little support and limited access to specialist services. Disability at a young age creates significant physical, emotional, educational and financial challenges, both for the child and their families. A high level of specialist support is vital to enjoy a good quality of life.
Although we are lucky that Stanley attends a specialist school, in late 2013 we came across Shine via a friend. Shine is a local charity based in nearby Gorleston, which children and young adults with additional needs or a disability in the Great Yarmouth area are able to access Saturday respite clubs. These are designed especially for our children - and also includes school holiday play schemes which is a lifeline to us as it helps break up half terms.
Shine also offer support, information and guidance for families, as well as organising fun days out which parents and siblings can also attend.
Stanley started attending in January 2014 and loves his sessions. He is able to socialise and has made friends (as have we). But more importantly he is treated as an individual in an environment where he is able to develop personal and life skills without judgement. This also gives my wife and I a much needed break.
I have decided to run The Norfolk 100 KM to raise funds for Shine. Starting from the Bailey Gate Castle (Kings Lynn) at 7:00AM following the Norfolk coastal path all the way to Cromer. There is a 16 hour time limit.

The furthest I have continually ran is 50 KM (31 miles) so this will be challenging to say
the least!
Stanley will be most likely attending sessions at Shine until he moves onto adult services. To show my gratitude and give something back to the team I would greatly appreciate sponsorship of any amount.
Thank you.
Jamie
