Story

I want to use this as an opportunity to remember my Grandad and honour the amazing man he was. On Tue 11th Feb, Grandad Terry sadly passed away at the grand old age of 92. I will always remember what a wonderful man he was and how he was a role model to me when I was younger. He was a loving grandad and had also been the most amazing great grandad. He always managed to bring joy to his grandchildren and great grandchildren and in return, nothing made him happier than being in their company.
Grandad spent the final part of his long journey in life, in St John’s Hospice. He spent just over 3 months there. I just can’t even put into words what a truly amazing place it is, with staff who go above and beyond in their care for those, who in my eyes, are privileged to spend their final chapter there. Grandad was treated like a king in there. Nothing was too much for him. He spent his final Christmas and his 92nd birthday there...and they really did celebrate both occasions so beautifully. And right up until he peacefully passed away, they treated him with complete dignity and respect. Without doubt, they made him feel happy, safe and loved.
And it’s not just the way they look after those in their care that is so clear to see, but also the support they give to the families at what is an extremely difficult time. Nothing is ever too much for them. They made it feel so comfortable and cared for us all. Even down to the little touches, like a constant supply of drinks, treats, magazines etc for the family and friends visiting. The sorts of things which make you feel so welcome and considered.
My nan was also cared for at St John’s before she sadly passed away and since then, my grandad has been raising money to support their work. And by taking part in the Hampton Court half marathon, I aim to continue this.
If you can support by either sharing this page, making a donation (however big or small), or both, then I would be so grateful.
Thank you to everyone for their support already.
