Story
Our nephews Tyler-Jay and Kaiden Atkins were both diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as babies and since then have attended Birmingham Children's Hospital for shared care with Birmingham Heartlands Hopsital. They are brave and inspirational young boys. With their brother Regan they live life to the full and prove everyday how strong they are! We are very proud of all 3 of them and hope one day a cure for cystic fibrosis can be found!
Around 10,400 people in the UK have cystic fibrosis; that's 1 in every 2,500 babies born. Cystic fibrosis affects around 100,000 people in the world. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is one of the UK's most common life-threatening inherited diseases. Cystic fibrosis is caused by a defective gene. As a result, the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, become clogged with thick sticky mucus resulting in chronic infections and inflammation in the lungs and difficulty digesting food.
