Jamie's '5 for 35' Challenge

5 for 35 · 1 May 2019
Edit: My ‘5 for 35’ Challenge was completed in September 2019 with over £3500 raised. I’m now aiming to complete a 25 day ‘Advent of Activity’ from December 1st-25th to reach £4000 & close the fundraising. I’ll be doing something physical every day to keep active & encourage others to do the same before enjoying their festive rewards I.e. hiking, cycling, circuit training, weights, swimming, skipping & walking. If 50 people can donate £3 max, we’ll get there. Thanks.
After my 35th birthday in April 2019, I will tackle the following challenges (that I've branded as '5 for 35'), and raise funds for Alzheimer Scotland:
1. The West Highland Way solo: a 96 mile walk from Milngavie to Fort William in Scotland (1st-5th May,
2. Bravehearts 3rd 'Scotsathlon' with Bravehearts Boxing Gym: Swim 1.5 miles across Loch Lomond, climb Ben Lomond (974 metres) & cycle 40 miles to Tarbet (40 participants, 25th May 19).
3. Munro Madness with Kyle Longmuir: 40 Scottish Munro mountains in 1 week (mountains over 914 metres/ 3000 feet, 4th July 19).
4. Mallaig to Hamilton cycle 160 miles from Mallaig to Fort William and Glencoe, then Loch Lomond, Glasgow, and finally Hamilton (August 19).
5. The Three Peaks North Africa with Iona's Adventures hillwalking: Hiking M'Goun, Ouanoukrim & Toubkal in Morocco, all over 4000 metres/ 13,000 feet (via Three Peaks Africa, 1st September 19).
Why? Are you mad? You've lost it! (things I hear quite regularly). Well, our health is a gift that can’t be taken for granted, so I wanted to be pro-active, ambitious and inspiring with my own fitness in this semi-milestone year, and seize the day. I see people every day that have debilitating conditions, or need someone to believe in them. Therefore, I've set myself goals that will really test me, and will hopefully encourage others to create a vision & pursue their own goals. Due to the tough demands of these 5 as a whole, I decided to fundraise for a charity and opted for Alzheimer Scotland.
I chose Alzheimer Scotland in memory of my late Grampa Bill Neill (1939-2018), who battled MS for 35 years, but developed dementia in later life. This was a difficult experience for our family, and the illness currently affects almost 1 million UK citizens, so I’ll dedicate my efforts to support those with dementia in Scotland.
If my story resonates with you, and inspires you to donate to Alzheimer Scotland, then please accept my gratitude and know that every little helps. I will be training hard for each obstacle in order the conquer the 5 for 35!!
Many thanks for your time and generosity,
Jamie Neill.
