Story
Singers of Songs for Syria
To mark the occasion of my imminent semi-retirement I have joined my local community choir, Vox Holloway. Prior to this, the only singing I’ve done is in the car, with my voice masked by the music on the CD player. Fortunately for me, this choir required no audition and the leader of the choir was very clear that people don’t need to be able to sing - I thought ‘this is the choir for me’!
It is a great choir and most importantly it has a big commitment to fundraising. We give three concerts a year and all the proceeds go to a range of good causes. This Christmas, our fundraising concert, is in aid of Hand in Hand for Syria – an incredible charity which delivers food, clothes, shelter, ambulances, educational resources and medical treatment to thousands of people across Syria http://www.handinhandforsyria.org.uk/.
The concert, called ‘Songs of Exile,’ features Hispanic and Palestinian music and is on December 1, 7.30pm at St Luke’s Church, west Holloway. Vox Holloway is trying to raise £7,000 through this concert. I am aiming to raise £250 to contribute to our target figure.
I have never asked people to sponsor me before and never thought I would, as I suspected it would involve something rather energetic like running (not for me!) However, singing in the choir has been a challenge, requiring commitment and lots of hard work, so I consider it my equivalent of running a half marathon (well probably 5K!).
I wonder if you might be able to offer a small donation to mark my last term at City Lit and my first performance. I realise we get many of these requests so please feel free to miss this one out. Of course, if you are interested please do come along, we’d love to see you. Contact me for more details/tickets.
