Great Wall of China Trek October 2003 · 18 October 2003 ·

As a result of long-term health conditions, more than 1 in 10 children in the UK can be denied a carefree childhood, and this number is growing. Our programmes empower children and families to explore new possibilities and rediscover the fun and magic of childhood.

Story

WE'VE DONE IT! - we trekked along the Great Wall of China in October to raise as much money as possible for the Over The Wall Gang Camp.

The youngsters who attend this camp gain in confidence and independence. They make friends and draw strength from others facing similar challenges. But, above all, they have tremendous fun. The camp relies completely on charitable donations, which enable them to provide free places.

We pledged to raise a minimum of £5,000 and, consequently, have had the begging bowl out, asking everyone to dig deep into their pockets.

This year:
  • Edexcel, the awarding body, has sponsored us, from part of the money that it would otherwise spend on corporate christmas cards, for £2,000!
  • Edexcel's Marketing & Communications Division created, recorded and designed a 5-track Charity CD at a team-building awayday, which has, so far, raised a total of £1,387.31!
  • we have held five Quiz Evenings with Raffles, which raised a total of £1,131.16! Thanks to: Gareth and Ross, our quizmasters and question-writers; Sarah O and Sarah P, our cooks; Shirley and Lisa, our enumerators; Monica & John, our raffle ticket folders; Nick, our chauffeur and porter; St. Luke's, Tunbridge Wells, for the loan of the church hall; and everyone else who helped out.
  • Carol and Shirley have run three Garage Sales, a Boot Fair stall and a Book-Rental (at Elvi's), which made £491.30!
  • Liz and Tina have held a Curry Lunch and sold quiches at Tonbridge Jobcentre, on our behalf, and raised £441!
  • we have held a Barbecue with Raffle, which made £258.19! Thanks to: Bryn, our cook; Jane, our entrance/raffle ticket seller; Michael and Lee, Victoria & Samantha, our raffle ticket folders; St. Luke's, Tunbridge Wells, for the loan of the church hall; and everyone else who helped out.
  • Victoria has run a Cake Stall at school with a friend, had a Guess How Many Sweets in the Jar, and asked guests to her Birthday Disco to donate money instead of bringing presents, making a grand total of £196!
  • St. Luke's congregation have donated half of a Coffee Morning's takings and proceeds from Webb Ivory Cards to make a total of £151!
  • Samantha also asked guests to her Birthday Disco in May to donate money instead of bringing presents, making £70!
  • Play & Chat at the New Life Church, in TW, raised £70!
  • St. Luke's Infant School have had a Jumble Sale and a Change Jar on the go, which has made £66!
  • Barbara held a "drop-in for a drink" and collected £58.80!
  • Pam and her colleagues at the Tunbridge Wells High School were sponsored to use a pedometer to measure the distance walked around school and raised £16!
  • Gareth, Jessica & Daniel provided a carwashing service and raised £15!
  • also, we have received £3,471.00 in offline donations and sponsorship!
A very big thankyou to everyone for their generosity and time! Please sponsor us online. It's the most efficient way for us to raise funds for our charity. If you are a UK taxpayer your donation will be increased by almost a third at no cost to you. Both we and the Over The Wall Gang Camp really appreciate your donation. Any amount will make a difference but please try to give generously! On this page, you can also see how we are doing!!! Julie & Trevor
