Climbing Table Mountain for "AFIA"

I am very fortunate .......I am able to get ......"Away From It All"

On Easter Sunday I am planning to climb Table Mountain in CapeTown, South Africa, to raise money for  The West Yorkshire and Dales branch of "AFIA". ( Away From It All .)This is a Church of England founded charity administered by The Mother's Union whose aim is to " help those whose family life has met with adversity." This charity, which relies solely on donations to exist, sends socially disadvantaged families in crisis, away on holiday to the coast of England for a week. Children in families where there is poverty, where there are relationship breakdowns, families who do not know what it is to call somewhere home, children who have never had a holiday or seen the sea or sand can all benefit from this charity. The charity provides caravans at the coast and each year finances , feeds, clothes and transports families away for a week to the seaside to experience a holiday together, away from the strains and stresses  of everyday life and to hopefully find some healing in relationships.

  The last ten years have been physically very challenging for me, ten years ago I could not have contemplated this challenge of climbing Table Mountain. Due to a genetic bone disorder my spine was crumbling away. I was unable to walk and was facing life in a wheelchair. With the help of a talented south african surgeon I had my spine rebuilt with metal. In the years that followed the disorder appeared in my hips so I have since had five hip replacements to rectify the problems. I am happy to say that today I am fully "up and running" and feel it is my turn to give something back. The climb will be a huge physical challenge for me coupled with my inherent fear of heights so I will really have to "dig deep" to get up that mountain!

  I feel truly blessed and grateful to the talented medical teams who have "fixed " me and so given me an opportunity to face my challenge. As the medical teams have changed my life so your donation will help make a difference, changing the lives of many families in need, to get "Away From It All", to see the sea, to feel the sand and to build their "castle."
