Story
Two old gals jumping out of plane at 10,000 feet. Really? Absolutely! And
for an excellent cause!
Sonya and Jane are undertaking our rescheduled (due to Covid) Tandem
Skydive on 25th July 2021 in memory of Gavey Chelvanayagam. We want to
raise funds for Ward A5 and the Colorectal Nurse Specialists at Poole Hospital,
as a way of thanking them all for the kind and compassionate care they gave to
Sonya’s husband, Gavey who sadly died of colorectal cancer in January 2018.
“From my husband’s
diagnosis of colorectal cancer in September 2014 until his death in January
2018 we received excellent and compassionate care from every department within
Poole Hospital but in particular from the colorectal nurse specialists. We were
treated with kindness and respect. Due to these positive experiences he wanted
to die in hospital and the final days of his life were on A5 ward. During this
time the nurses ensured that our needs and wishes were met and he received
optimal care. Most importantly for both him and his family, his wishes of a peaceful,
dignified and comfortable death were granted”.

Around 42,000 people are diagnosed with bowel
cancer in the UK each year. It is the 4th most common cancer in the UK but is
the second largest “cancer killer” (Bowel Cancer UK, 2020). Raising awareness
is crucial as bowel cancer is curable if detected and treated at an early
stage.
