Dundee Kiltwalk 2025 · 17 August 2025 ·

Dr Elizabeth Ferris, established Dundee Dragons Wheelchair Sports Club in February 2013, when it became clear that there were few opportunities for active wheelchair users. The structure affords support to players, coaches and volunteers to enable personal growth and development of skills which has led to employment and into further education, as well as contributing towards the reduction in social isolation and increased wellbeing.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I signed up for the Wee Wander Dundee Kilt Walk to raise funds for Dundee Dragons Wheelchair Sports Club to say THANK YOU for their help turning my life around after a stroke in October 2021. My life didn’t end with my stroke, it changed.

Meeting the Dundee Dragons for the first time at Dawson Park in October 2022 to see if I could ride a trike was unforgettable. I slipped down the trike 3 times, my heart was thumping in my chest, my legs were bruised black and blue. That didn’t, however, put me off and I went back again and again.

Dundee Dragons have a range of bikes suitable for children, young adults and the more mature - ME! There are bikes to suit different mobilities and needs. Eg I need straps to secure my feet on the pedals and a special glove ensures my left hand stays on the handlebar.

Cycling on an adaptive trike has given me a new zest for life. I feel free and very much alive on a recumbent trike with the wind blowing past my face. There is nothing to beat a bike ride in the open air.

My walking pace with a stick is slow and often unsteady due to my balance issues. Exercising my core, weak leg and arm muscles in fresh air every week continues to boost my mental health and my physical strength. I strive to be as independent as possible and enjoy a fun filled life that keeps on giving.

I am looking forward to challenging myself to complete the course on the ICE Trike pictured below.

I’d really appreciate any support you can give for this very deserving charity

Thank you

Janice Rae
