Hi Guys,

 

I'm off to Cuba soon and I thought I'd see the country by bike. So I joined a charity challenge and here I am writing to you!! The ride is 8 days - spinning from Havana all the way to Trindad with a couple of salsa sessions along the way - I should be just in my element;-) Although I've only got 3 weeks to get fit!

I've chosen SOS as my charity as I have previously spent 5 months in Kenya  volunteering. I investigated a lot of charities whilst out there and was dissappointed by the majority - discovering that the money never really reaches where it needs to. SOS however have a great set up where they create a village. SOS build or rent a nubmer of houses, select a local women as a mother and then help place orphanes into the homes - families of 3 usually. Responsible and dependable men are  also selected  from the community to participate in the childrens lives so they get a sense of family structure and support. SOS money goes towards setting up these homes, ensuring children have a family,money , food, water,medical care and schooling.

From all the Africans I spoke with - all agreed this was the most positive and effective charity on the ground. Not only enhancing the lives of their children but providing a well needed sense of purpose for adults within the community.

The number of orphanes in Third world countires like Kenya is simply outstanding. There is an orphanage on  just about every street corner in Nairobi. The economy does not generate enough work for even 3 quarters of the population, so many adults are left jobless and without a purpose. SOS works positively to stablise and support the growth of the community and its children.

So follow me on my tour and take the opportunity to dig deep and help me raise £1000 pounds for a Charity I know first hand actually makes a difference.
