4 mile hike to top withens · 25 June 2022

Every 2 hours, someone in the UK sustains a spinal cord injury. Their world – and that of their family – is turned upside-down. SIA aim to reach everyone affected by spinal cord injury, to connect them to all the help and support they need to life a fulfilled life.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In October of 2021 I was involved an awful accident whilst at work, falling backwards approximately 25ft. The result of this accident was a burst L1-2 vertebrae in my back. I was rushed to Leeds General Infirmary for spinal surgery. After 3 hours they were able to fuse a plate onto my spine and pinning it to stablise it. 4 days later I had to return to surgery for decompression procedure as my spinal cord had swollen and my nerve sack had been compromised.

Feeling at an all time low my mental health was affected. I believed at one point I was going to die, then I believed my life as I knew it was over, possibly wheelchair bound for life.how was I going to cope having a young family? I was given a number to call, Andy Wharton at SIA,Spinal Injuries Association. This was genuinely a game changer. He spoke of his own experience, that if it came to it a wheelchair wouldn't be the end of me infact the beginning of a new me!! He helped me face my fears, give me  things to focus on and to use my worries as a tool to help me. SIA have linked me to other organisations that are helping with aftercare and support.

I was in LGI for 4 weeks, before being transferred to pinderfields regional spinal unit where I was to be rehabilitated. After 5 weeks I was able to walk very short distances using walking sticks.

I am currently attending motionrehab in Morley,Leeds, that are working on muscles to help with balance, placement, strength. They are working Miracles and my stamina has improved which means I can walk further without any aid. My mobility is improving and I'm now able to bend, stretch, lift my young daughters and I was even able to jump,in my latest session, only 4 inches from the floor but still an achievement. I still have very little feeling on my right foot and parts of my right leg. But after this program has ended there is a hope I will make a good recovery.

Coming from a place where I had lost the abilities of what I took for granted I continue on my recovery journey with support from family, friends, SIA and Natasha at CFG law.

To try and inspire people I aim to walk a 4 mile round trip to a beautiful setting, top withens,a special place I have not been able to visit since my injury. This will take place on the 25th June 2022. The money i raise will hopefully help SIA support people that have been affected by spinal injuries.
