New Year Charity Face Reclamation
Lockdown beard? Check. It’s been 301 days and counting
without so much as looking at a razor. Now it’s 2021 and it’s time to say good riddance to 2020, including the beard! But not before we raise some cash for a
good cause. And of course have some fun doing it!
So, I’m asking you to donate during the month of January.
The charity is Crisis (see below) and the target is £1000. Here is the fun
part: what I do with my beard at the end of Jan depends on YOU! Depending on how much is raised by 24th Jan, I will do the following to my
beard and keep it in that style for ONE WEEK:
- £200 = Bleach it white like Santa (never too late)
- £300 = Beard bedazzling! (beads etc)
- £500 = Shave it into a huge handle bar/mutton
chops style (think Colonel Mustard from Clue!) - £700 = Dye it pink
- £1000 = All of the above, finishing in Wolverine
style
To recap: that’s one week of work calls and grocery store
trips. Before and after pictures will be shared!
About Crisis
Crisis is a UK national charity that aims to end homelessness. Homelessness figures and those
at risk of becoming homeless have been going the wrong way for much of the past decade. The pandemic has led to more uncertainty for so many. Couple that with the cold weather at this time of year and Crisis needs our support more than ever so they can help those in need.

Growing a beard has been a fun journey and, at the very
least, has kept me entertained. It’s always been a good conversation starter too. Here are some of the memorable reactions I’ve had:
- ‘Are you going back to your Canadian roots? –
Anon. Lumberjack, presumably - ‘You’re like that guy in The Revenant’ – Shashi
Gilbert. True, but without the Academy Award - ‘How’s your side gig as a barista coming along?’
– can’t remember, but it’s a good one - ‘Now that you’re a bearded gentleman like
myself’ – Mark Johnson. Not sure what followed, but I feel part of some exclusive club. Presumably I need to brew craft beer or something now? - Newest member of ZZ Top – Various
