Our mission is to save species, safeguard biodiversity & empower communities. Only 15% of land and 7% of ocean are protected, and over 37,400 species are threatened with extinction. Support us and help make a stand against extinction. UK Reg. Charity 1177505).

Story

I will be undertaking the Yorkshire Three Peaks Trek - ascending more than 7,000 feet over a 24-mile route to raise money for Explorers Against Extinction. Please read why below:

Humanity is currently presiding over the Earth's sixth known mass extinction event, and the first to be caused be caused by unnatural phenomenon. Since 1970, the Earth has lost at least 76% of its freshwater wildlife, 39% of its land-based wildlife and 39% of all marine wildlife - in the same period the human population has doubled.

More than a third of the world’s land surface is now devoted to crop or livestock production. This in part has resulted in the planet losing 52 percent of its biodiversity, over half of the life it once contained - these are all official figures published by the UN and NGO's such as the WWF.

Entire food chains are now in the midst of or on the verge of collapse and as this process continues, more and more species are pushed to extinction. In fact, around 1 million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction.

We are pioneering treatments for diseases, striving to improve quality of life, alleviating poverty and planning settlements on neighbouring planets. However, these advancements will be futile if the ecosystem we are reliant on for survival collapses.

Fortunately, organisations such as Explorers Against Extinction participate in and fund conservation projects vital to the survival of endangered species, such as our close relative the Gorilla.

They are also positively influencing the survival chances of species including but not limited to turtles, pangolins, and various big cats. If we are to halt or even reverse these alarming patterns, these projects are essential.

As such, my mother and I will walk up, down, to and from the three highest peaks of the Yorkshire Dales within 12 hours on August 7th - every penny that I raise will go to Explorers Against Extinction and help to fund the continuation of these conservation projects.

From the charity:

Explorers Against Extinction works to raise awareness about the threats facing the world’s most iconic species and their habitats while also raising significant funds for nominated front line projects pivotal in the battle to protect them.

Through annual exhibitions and events we raise funds for and the profile of conservation issues and to connect with ‘everyday explorers’ who like us, want to safeguard wildlife & wild spaces for future generations. Our Patrons include Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Levison Wood, Pip Stewart and Benedict Allen.
