London Marathon 2022 · 2 October 2022 ·

Hull & East Yorkshire Powerchair Football Club formed almost 10 years ago, based in Hull, affiliated with The WFA & East Riding FA. We are a registered charity with the aim of giving disabled people who use a wheelchair the chance to play powerchair football at either a social or competitive level.

Story

This October, I will be running the TCS 2022 London Marathon to help raise valuable funds for my twin brother George’s football team - Hull & East Yorkshire Powerchair Football Club (HEPFC).

George was born with cerebral palsy, but has always had a deep love for sport. Having spent most weekends of his childhood on the touchline watching me play football with our mum, it was always his dream to be able to play for a football team of his own. With George needing a wheelchair to move around in, this was always difficult, until around eight years ago when George went for a tester session with HEPFC and absolutely loved it! Ever since that day, he has been a proud member of the club and thoroughly enjoys playing power chair football. The club is nothing short of amazing and to say that it is a family orientated club is an understatement. They have supported George not just on the field but off it as well, when we have sadly experienced some tragic life events. This friendship and support was simply above and beyond and is something that I will be forever grateful for.

The pandemic has hit the club hard, most of the players fell under the vulnerable category, meaning that shielding was in place and the club had to stop training/meeting for well over a year. This was extremely hard for all the players and their families, as they had very little social interaction whilst being away from football and their friends for so long.

Now that the club, training and playing matches has restarted once again, any money raised will be a huge help in facilitating the growth and development of the team members. Additionally, any money raised will hopefully help to increase participation, so that more people can participate in playing powerchair football and become a part of this wonderful football club.

Any donations, no matter the size, will go a long way.

Much Love, James x

Hull & East Yorkshire Powerchair Football Club was formed in 2012, following two successful taster sessions. Since then, we have significantly grown having over 20 players registered at the club, who all play at various levels both competitive and recreational. Although playing football is the reason we get together, we are a club first and for some members attending the club is a way of getting out and about and away from the normal day to day troubles of living with a severe and often life-limiting disability. We have a wide range of players who play at various levels from the National League to Regional League including those who just come for social activity.

As a registered charity our main aim and objective is to allow physically disabled people to play a fast-paced team game, something that most of our members have never been able to do before. Imagine the feeling of finally finding something you can actually do! Great isn’t it. Our mission is to give disabled people of Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, East Yorkshire including Humber Estuary the chance to play powerchair football at both a social and competitive level despite their age or gender. In addition to this, we aim to continue to create community for parents, family members and carers so they know they are not alone.

Funding for the charity will enable it to continue to achieve it’s charitable aim and objective providing disabled people of all ages and genders the chance to play powerchair football.
