Story
Just after Christmas 2017 my then eight year old daughter (Ellie) suddenly became ill. She had started to drink a lot and developed a severe headache. After being admitted to hospital and a round of tests she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. She now has to keep her blood sugars under constant control via a pump and CGM.
This obviously came as a huge shock to us and has meant that our life once again dramatically changed. Although Ellie dealt with it fantastically it was a lot to cope with so soon after we lost her sister Charlotte.
So, in 2019 I started a number of physical challenges (see list below) and have just kept going! COVID restricted my activities recently but i have picked up fundraising activities again as i take part in this years London Marathon that i should have completed pre lockdown.
JDRF are committed to eradicating type 1 diabetes and its affects for everyone on the UK with type 1, and at risk of developing it. They fund world class research and ensuring it moves forward as fast as possible. They also give support to people with type 1 and their families. We have received invaluable support from JDRF and the diabetes community over the past year as we attempt to make sense of this condition.
Less than a hundred years ago the onset of Diabetes would result in premature death. Its is my hope that the continued research will eventually find a cure so that my daughter doesn't have to grow up with this horrible condition.
