In Memory of Roy Moore 1962 - 2017

In August 2015, after several months of Roy not feeling well , we were given the devastating news Roy had stomach cancer. This was terrible news as the family had already lost his Mum with the same condition. However being transferred to Northen General Hospital they informed us they could treat the cancer. The treatement of the cancer was on operation where they would remove 60% of Roy’s stomach
which they did successfully in October. Roy recovered well from the operation and was soon up on his feet again, and even enjoyed food (in small portions … Loved being able to eat all the bad things i.e. Cake , Chocolate and Biscuits which he had a passion for !
In November we had to return to be given the results of the operation and if any further treatment would be required …. We were given the amazing news the operation had been a success in which the cancer had been fully removed no further treatment was required Roy was cancer Free !!
As you can imagine this news in November gave Roy myself Kirsty & Kieran a complete new aspect on life, so we began 2016 making plans for Holidays. Days out together as a family and with friends and not forgetting the Nights As well.. we started to enjoy our times out together and Roy realised how lucky he had been and he commented on this many times and he always praised the team who had looked after him & on his regular check-ups we always laughed and joked with the consultant and nurses they became our friends
Roy made the most of 2016 he rekindled his love of Fishing and played Golf on occasions, he managed also to return to work in the family business.
However, in December 2016 we all realised Roy wasn’t well again so as the Moore’s do we didn’t want to dwell on this so we decided to make the best of the festive season as we were unsure of what the future was to hold …..
In the first week of January 2017 as everyone is starting a new year, Roy received the devastating news the cancer had returned, this time in the Bile Duct as you can imagine the family where shocked and devastated at the news, not knowing what the future held or if any treatment could be given, Roy was to attend Weston Park so they could advise the family of the plan.
The Plan was Roy would need a stent fitted to help relieve the jaundice and he would start a round of 6 cycles of Chemo, they advised they could treat the cancer but unfortunately wasn’t curable
Throughout all of this Roy was amazing, staying strong /positive and still had an amazing aspect on life, his words “It isn’t going to ruin my life!”
So, the battle commenced with the first Chemo in Feb 2017 , we had to make some changes to our lives but we were all determined to take each day and carry on as much as possible,
Roy still lived a normal life, he carried on working caring for his family and making amazing memories with his family & friends as much as he could.
However due to health conditions Roy was only able to complete 4/6 of the cycle he was due to have, so all treatment was stopped this was another shock all Roy said its not beating me !!!
In August Roy’s health started to deteriorate , he also developed ascites which was caused with the cancer this is a swelling of the stomach and makes life very uncomfortable. The Cancer had started to Misbehave (as our consultant advised us !) and had started to spread , so we then had to decide what the next step would be we were told they could do another round of Chemo but this would be more aggressive than the first , or to have no treatment at all , Roy was also told they need to drain his stomach of the fluid to try and make him more comfortable…
Roy chose the option to have another cycle of Chemo , this was very aggressive and made him really ill, he was very frail and his appetite was zero, he even lost his sweet tooth for chocolate and cakes anyone who knew Roy would know he was very partial to these !
In November we had to admit Roy to Weston Park, where after a scan they told us there was nothing further they could do and we had limited time. Our consultant was devastated when she told us the news as over the months we had become friends, Roy was always grateful for all the Care he received in Weston Park and Northern General
and he could never praise the Doctors and Nurses enough a nurse once said to him You are a Patient, Patient.
Roy wanted to be at home with this family so with the help from Weston Park and Rotherham Hospice we could fulfil Roy’s wishes for him to come home, he also wanted to go and watch his beloved team Rotherham United (which was made possible for him to do)
Sadly, Roy only had a week at home before he lost his battle with cancer. it was an emotional week we managed to share a lot of memories and we will always cherish this. In this week the team at Rotherham hospice where fantastic and they made sure Roy was comfortable and their support with the family was wonderful
To say a Massive Thank You for the help we received from Rotherham Hospice we will taking part in the Glow Flow Walk in Memory of Roy Moore
Jeanette, Kirsty & Kieran and not forgetting Alfie (our dog)
