Story
(Dr) Dave Shirley died of leukaemia 14 years ago. Not long before, his consultant asked why he had chosen to be a scientist not a medic. His answer - what's the point of being a medic if there is no cure? - inspired me to do what I can to raise money to find that cure.
When Marta, my mother, died 45 years ago, only one of every ten children diagnosed with leukaemia survived. Now it's eight out of ten. Moreover, six out of ten people of all ages survive blood cancer for at least ten years. Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, however;is proving a tough nut to crack in older people.
The last few years have been hard. Blood Cancer UK, a small charity which is the major UK funder of blood cancer research, lost nearly half its income in 2020. It is, however, still supporting 5,500 people on more than 40 clinical trials.
Round and About Walks 2025 run from May 19 to June 1, with proceeds shared between Blood Cancer UK and the Bishops Castle Community College. Donations on this page all go to Blood Cancer UK.
