On Sunday September 15th, an intrepid team of Thomas’s Battersea teachers tackled the End of Season Finale Triathlon at Dorney Lake. The team took part in a selection of triathlon challenges including First-Timer (200m swim, 5.3k bike, 2.5k run), Novice (400m swim, 10.6k bike, 2,5k run), Sprint (750m swim, 21.2k bike, 5km)
and Olympic (1500m swim, 42.4k bike, 10k run) in aid of the Thomas’s Foundation project which began at Battersea in January 2019.

Pathway is Thomas’s Foundation’s latest dynamic educational programme designed to enhance the traditional primary-school education of 10 to 11 year-olds. Pathway joins TF’s already busy
stable of exciting and creative projects and has been specifically designed to help ambitious children from more disadvantaged backgrounds living in Battersea, Clapham, Fulham and Kensington.

TF has garnered advice from experts in this field to develop a free-of-charge programme, which builds on the education already offered by the primary State sector.  The approach, which is multi- disciplinary, incorporates investigative maths and science, literature and elements of art, music, philosophy, drama and sport.  Taught by Thomas’s teachers, Pathway requires student attendance one Saturday morning per month.  The programme, including all resources and access to Google Classroom, is means tested and provided free of charge.

Setting it apart from other tools designed to improve education, is the fact that it is neither examined nor results driven.  The concept, and what makes it unique, is the provision of an enhanced, broad education rather than a booster for better exam results.

A pilot TF Pathway programme took place at Battersea from January until July 2019 with excellent results and feedback from teachers, feeder schools and students. TF’s aim is that pupils successfully
completing Pathway will have greater ambition, confidence and access to selective State secondary schools, academies or bursary-funded places within the Independent sector.

The Battersea staff team:

Simon O’Malley, Arabella Finch, Sean Roberts, David Turpin, Rachel Turpin, Megan Thompson, Jeff Hawkins, Hannah Gilbert, Sarah Dearlove, Kirsty Carter, Rachel Bunce, Susan Stillman and Nikki May. It will also include a number of friends and family, plus a guest appearance from ex-driver Paul May.

It was a fantastic event, with all the athletes successfully completing their challenges on an extremely warm day at Dorney Lake. A huge amount of money has already been donated, but it is not too late to contribute to this fantastic cause.
