Local older people's charity, Age Connects Cardiff & the Vale, are anticipating a sharp rise in demand for their services this Winter but are facing limited resources to ensure every older person can access the vital support they need. Can you help?

Story

Winter has always been a challenging time for vulnerable older people and for the NHS. Government updates state that this Winter could be particularly difficult due to the impacts of COVID-19 on top of the usual increase in emergency demand and seasonal respiratory diseases such as flu. The Older Peoples Commissioner for Wales also stated in their recent report that older people have felt the impact of isolation and of staying indoors, experiencing a loss of confidence and being fearful about going back out again. It goes on to say that 11% of older people in Wales an estimated 91,000 people feel consistently lonely. With this in mind, local older peoples charity, Age Connects Cardiff and the Vale, are anticipating a sharp rise in demand for their services this Winter but with limited resources to ensure each and every older person who needs support can access it. This appeal is urging people to please show support for those in need this Winter.

About the charity

It’s a sad reality that older people are particularly vulnerable to social isolation or loneliness owing to loss of friends and family, mobility or income. It can be a terrible and frightening experience to see no-one for days on end. Every one of us is getting older, and regardless of circumstance it is something that we will all have to contend with. Hopefully, most people have the benefit of friends and family to help them along life’s journey. Sadly, many older people living in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan do not have this security and are all alone facing the uncertainty that old age can often bring. They may be recovering from illness or bereavement, struggling to cope financially or cope in any one or a dozen of ways. At Age Connects Cardiff and the Vale they find practical help and advice and people who care about the challenges they face. Our local charity makes a huge difference to the lives of so many older people who have nowhere else to turn and often are vulnerable, isolated and in poverty.
