Last Saturday's marathon was a great success, with everyone involved managing to complete their distance, despite the challenging course and the atrocious weather, with rain so heavy that at times the cars on the nearby roads had to stop driving! There was quite a lot of pain, and a few frustrations when people took wrong turnings in the woods, but a lot of fun too, and we were all very glad to get in out of the rain at the end of it.

On Saturday 18th June, we will be running, walking, cycling, rolling or wobbling our way around Stourhead Estate in Wiltshire, raising funds for Ataxia UK.

 

Some are braving the full 26.2 mile marathon through the rough, muddy and extremely hilly tracks of the estate, while others are facing the challenge of a half or quarter marathon either on foot, on two wheels, or even pushing babies in buggies! It's going to be hectic, but hopefully a lot of fun, and a great way of raising money for a very good cause.

 

 

ATAXIA UK

Ataxia is the name given to a group of neurological disorders that affect balance, coordination, and speech. There are many different types of ataxia that can affect people in different ways.   Anyone of any age can get ataxia, but certain types are more common in certain age groups. For example, people with Friedreich’s ataxia are usually diagnosed in childhood or adolescence.  Around 10,000 adults in the UK have a type of ataxia. Some forms of ataxia are treatable, but in most cases there is still no cure. 

Ataxia UK provides unique services and support for those who suffer from Ataxia, and is funding a wide range of research projects to try to find treatments that can help ataxia, and ultimately to find a cure.
