Story

TW: SUICIDE

How many people do you know have felt suicidal at one stage or another? I’m not sure I know the real number, as it’s not always obvious. Nevertheless, from close friends to ex-partners, numerous people in my life have suffered with their mental health, often to the point of complete hopelessness.

The first time I came face to face with the reality of suicide, I was 17 and got an ominous text from a friend, so I ran into work screaming, crying, being laughed at by my colleagues as I tore through the supermarket aisles in a desperate attempt to find them and calm them down whilst trying to prize a sharp object from their fingers.

Later when I worked in the police, I talked with strangers as they were strapped to hospital beds screeching, fighting to be released and end their own suffering. Sadly, I also had suspects who died hours after we met.

Now, as a teacher, I’ve seen teenagers suffering, too. Weeping. Breaking down. Falling apart. Trying to hold themselves together. Worrying they won’t be successful.

Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy, especially as the circumstances surrounding such a devastating action are often painfully sad. One of the most common reasons behind suicide and suicidal thoughts is severe mental or emotional ill-health.

The Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide. But they aren’t only there for the moment of crisis, they also work hard to prevent crisis, offering listening and support to people and communities in times of need - in prisons, schools, hospitals and on the rail network. In short, they talk to people and they save lives.

So, I’ve decided to join the Samaritans 30km in November challenge to support their incredible work, meaning I need to somehow run 30km in the next 30 days (in addition to my usual work and gym time! 😅Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
