Story
Hello my friends!
I've been selected by Engineers Without Borders UK to travel to Bangladesh, the most vunerable country in the world to impacts from climate change, where just 40% of the population have access to electricity.
For three months this Autumn I will voluntarily be working with the charity SAFE http://safebangladesh.wordpress.com/ to help ‘reduce the vulnerability of low income households to environmental hazards such as flooding and strong winds’.
T&Cs are undefined but this will likely involve doing research into the local bamboo production, developing best practice ways for jointing house frames, and running workshops with locals in slums and villages to teach them the key bits of engineering that will stop their houses from washing away or being blown over. All the knowledge I provide will then be transferrable throughout the population for years to come.
I'm raising money to help the charity support me whilst I'm there and support EWB-UK http://www.ewb-uk.org/ with making placements like these happen. With EWBs help SAFE and many other local charities across the world are helping remove barriers to development using technology to tackle poverty in a manner that empowers the local people. We're not just throwing money at a problem, but giving people the helping hand they need to sort things out for themselves.
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. Please forward on the link to anyone that might want to chip in and if you're around attend one of the events I'll be holding between now and my departure on the 9th of September.
Every penny is much appreciated - Thanks!
x Jen
