Each week at least twelve young people in the UK die suddenly as a result of undiagnosed heart conditions. At Cardiac Risk In the Young we aim to save young lives & to help those affected by the sudden cardiac death. We do this by providing support, information & screening those affected.

Story

The whirlwind that is Mandy Burrows came into my life through a friend and I am sad to say, was only a part of my life for such a short time before we lost her. We enjoyed a lot of random trips, nights out, nights in and her first ever girls holiday – a ‘mini-cruise’ to Amsterdam – enjoying life as a bunch of young women should.

On January 5th 2014 my very good friend suddenly and tragically passed away from what we later found out was Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome.

A beautiful, fit and healthy girl of only 29, she was one of the most energetic, incredible people I have ever had the pleasure to know. She was driven by a passion for the limelight – as an actress there was nothing she loved more than performing. She loved her family and friends more than anything and we were all lucky enough to experience her energy and support her at different times in her life.

In her short life, she was lucky enough to find the love of her life, marry him but then suddenly and tragically lost him to leukaemia. Being the brave and strong woman she was, she went on to fight a new day including raising money to help others with leukaemia and was slowly putting her life back together, taking steps towards planning an incredible future for herself. During her grieving process she made news friends through the amazing Widows and Young (WAY) charity where she found great solace and support.

Mandy was an active person who had run a lot – she was an inspiration and every time I train, I hear her encouraging me and supporting me to keep going and to push myself that extra mile.

I have chosen to raise funds for CRY as I want to do everything I can to help stop anyone else having to go through the pain of losing a dear loved one and also to try help those who unfortunately have, to get through each day – one at a time.

If you want to see how my training is going, I am using the tag #teamamerica on my twitter page www.twitter.com/jennielhiggins

If you want to read a little more about my wonderful friend, there is an article from the local paper about her here:
