ATACAMA CROSSING

A 250 kms 7 day unsupported race

In aid of

MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT

March 3 – 9 2013

To all my past, present and future supporters a big  THANK YOU. And yes, this is truly my very, very last mega challenge and appeal so I’m appealing to you just one last time for your generous support.

I’m going out with a mega one -

Time magazine rates the Racing the Planet Atacama Desert Marathon the toughest endurance race in the world after the Vendee Globe round the world yacht race!

So besides all my training and love of a challenge and adventure I seriously need your support. So much of these hugely tough endurance races are a question of mind over matter. You get to the point when your body has had it, just your mind keeps you going. To have lots of people supporting and following makes a wonderful difference, but most especially we can all know we are giving financial help to Macmillan Cancer Support

I will be 73 years old in June. Not only will I be the oldest competitor in this race by ten years, but I will be the oldest woman ever to finish one of these desert marathons!

It’s a 250kms (six marathons) in six days, unsupported event over rough, terrain. Competitors have to carry all their own kit. Sleeping bag, food etc. The average pack weighs 8-10 kilos. That is 20%of my body weight!

Some 160 competitors from more than 25 countries will be taking part.

If you would like to follow the race and the build-up to the race, go to http://www.racingtheplanet.com/ and click on ‘Atacama Crossing.’ During the race there will be hourly updates and all the competitor times at the end of each day. You can also send much appreciated messages of encouragement. We will try and write blogs but as the race starts at 8am and as I am unlikely to stumble into camp much before 7pm my blogs may be short.

Macmillan Cancer Support. is a wonderful organization. I visited their head office and was so moved and impressed with the invaluable, caring service they give. Offering every type of support from emotional to financial to people all over the world living with cancer and to their families and friends. Cancer took my darling cousin, Sophie’s life. She was only eighteen years old. We are all affected by cancer, it touches us all. Please give generously to support their work.  All the money you donate will go directly to the charity as  I am paying for everything else myself.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
