Thanks for visiting my Habitat for Humanity fundraising page!
Along with approximately 15 other people from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP's London and Dubai offices, I will be spending May 9 to 16 in Ghana, building houses with Habitat for Humanity as part of a Global Village team. We will be working with local people to help them build safe and decent homes.
The new homeowners are all on low incomes and live in poverty housing. They invest hundreds of hours of labour into building their own homes and the homes of their neighbours.
A decent home gives dignity. It motivates people to achieve more, including motivating young people to better themselves educationally. As well, in many parts of the world a poor home is the breeding ground for life-threatening diseases, so a good home can help people live healthier lives.
This particular challenge is very meaningful to me after having seen for myself how people live in poorer communities in countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Burma, India and Lesotho. I believe in helping people to make the most of the opportunities available to them - and this is a very tangible way of improving and increasing those opportunities.
Habitat for Humanity's mission is to eliminate substandard housing worldwide. It was founded in 1976 and now works in over 90 countries helping needy people of all races and religions. Currently one house is built every 10 minutes or so! However, there is still much more for the organization to do.
As part of this housebuilding challenge, I have committed to raise funding for Habitat for Humanity's work worldwide. I would greatly appreciate any amount you might be able to give towards this worthy cause.
