The Oliver Fisher Special Care Baby Trust supports the Neonatal Unit at Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham. The charity fundraises in order to buy the highly specialised and sophisticated equipment needed to care for sick and premature babies and we look after approximately 1000 babies a year.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I never thought I would run a marathon but when The Oliver Fisher were looking for volunteers, I couldn't think of a better reason to give it a go!

I had a few complications during my second pregnancy but I was advised that these were with me & not our baby. I was induced due to the complications & we were over the moon to welcome our baby boy Alexander into the world. I got to hold him for a couple of minutes before we realised his breathing didn't seem right. A Doctor took him off to check him over whilst I recovered. I was then taken to see him & I had no idea that he would be in an incubator in the special care unit attached to multiple machines. We were broken. My arms ached so much to hold my baby, I felt so empty.

The Oliver Fisher Unit were absolutely fantastic from the moment we arrived. They could not do enough for us & they cared for Alexander like he was their own just like they did with all the babies in the unit. We were able to visit anytime we liked & they really do think of everything like providing breast pumps & parking vouchers so parents don't have to worry. I know they also provide accommodation for parents who don't live locally as well as meal vouchers.

Thankfully, after 8 days, Alexander was able to come home. It doesn't sound like long now, but at the time it felt like an eternity. There were babies who had been at the unit for so much longer or that sadly do not get to go home & we can't imagine how hard that must be.

I'll be honest, we didn't really know much about The Oliver Fisher Unit before our time there & I had no idea that they are a charity! We are so lucky to have the unit so close to home.

For someone who doesn't run, I know a marathon is ambitious but after seeing so many babies fighting to get better, I know I can do this for them.

I will be organising a couple of things to raise money but in the meantime, if you would like to donate, it would mean the world.

Thank you! X
