London Marathon 2019 · 28 April 2019 ·

We want all children to thrive in their families and have loving relationships. We work to build an effective child welfare system to make that a reality. We advise parents and kinship carers, run projects like Lifelong Links for young people in care and we campaign for better support for families.

Story

I am running the London Marathon to raise money for Family Rights Group (www.frg.org.uk).

FRG is a charity that supports Families.  In particular it supports Families when they are facing some of their worst challenges and when Local Authorities are intervening in their lives with the threat of no longer seeing their children.

I know what it’s like to be there. I was lucky, I had all the resources I  could need, all the support I could ask for.  We had our happy ending. And still it was an awful experience.  Many other Families lack those resources, lack that support, never get that happy ending.

FRG offers a free and confidential telephone and digital advice service providing legal and practical advice to families.

It’s there to support kinship carers, for example grandparents, who are raising a relative or friend's child, including helping them to set up local support groups.

FRG advocates for parents whose children are subject to child
protection inquiries or at risk of being removed into care
.

It is Campaigning for families to have a voice, be treated fairly and get help early to prevent problems escalating.

Inevitably FRG is underfunded.  For example, they are currently only able to answer 30% of calls to their helpline.  That’s over 10,000  families a year who can’t access the help they need in their moment of crisis.

Please give generously.  Not only are you helping Families who need it, but a recent impact evaluation suggests that the service saves the public purse an average of £23 for every £1 invested (note: that it saves at least £8 and could save as much as £39 per £1 invested).

Added to which you get to laugh at me for being so foolhardy.
