K2 TREK - SENSE INTERNATIONAL 2007 · 27 November 2006

Our vision is of a world in which people with deafblindness are equal and active members of society. In partnership with our local delivery partners, we help some of the most disadvantaged and marginalised people to Live, Learn and Thrive

Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online.

By now you might be aware that for the last six years, in my 'spare' time', I have helped manage Sense International - the only UK charity that seeks to provide a better future for probably the most disadvantaged children in the lesser developed world: they are both deaf and blind.

One of the most common causes for deaf blindness is premature birth, as links between the senses and brain are virtually the last development in the womb.  I don't think we can imagine what life would be like if we could not communicate or learn easily, but have all our human, emotional capabilities.  To date, we have now set up over 30 schools in India, where there are 400,000 deaf blind people, as well as schools in Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Columbia, Peru, Brazil, Chile, Romania, Serbia, Russia..  Other causes include rubella and 'Ushers syndrome'  - born deaf due to a genetic disorder, but with a 25% probability of going blind at puberty..... unimaginable.

This year the trek is a big one: 24 of us will walk to the K2 Base Camp.  Starting at over 3300 metres we will gradually climb up to 5800 (nearly 20,000 feet) as we walk 170 kilometres over 11 days.  We will camp for 8 of these days on the Baltoro Glacier - the largest glacier in the world outside of the polar regions - as we gradually walk pass 8 out of the highest 17 mountains in the world: K2; Gasherbrum 1 and 2; Masherbrum; Broad Peak....  This is not an easy trek, but don't tell the others!!!

Training - and weight loss! - have started.

Every penny you kindly give goes direct to the Charity.  £100 keeps a child in one of our schools in India for a year; £20 pays for a detailed assessment of a deafblind child in East Africa; £1000 will set up a training programme for teachers in Latin America; £2000 will pay for a sensory stimulation room in Eastern Eruope....

Thank you very much for visiting my fundraising page.  Your sponsorship is really very much appreciated.

Kind regards.

Jeremy

P.S.  Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure.  It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me:  Sense International will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Many thanks for your support.
