I have always been so grateful for the chances I have had growing up. I have been able to complete school, go to University, complete an MA degree and follow my dreams of owning a ballet school. None of this would have been possible without the fantastic support of my wonderful family. They have been there to support me emotionally and financially throughout my education. I have never had to worry about the financial strain of simply being a girl and having my period. However, sadly for many girls in Africa the reality is very different. The high cost of sanitary protection means that many girls simply cannot afford to buy sanitary towels or tampons during their period. Combined with the very common taboo surrounding menstruation and the lack of a means to protect themselves during their period, girls cannot attend school. They eventually get so behind on their schoolwork after missing classes every month that they have to drop out of school completely.
