In 2027, I’ll be running the London Marathon for Group B Strep Support — a charity that means the world to me and my family.

This cause is deeply personal. When my daughter Hettie was just minutes old, she became critically ill with a Group B Strep infection. Within the first two weeks of her life, she developed sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis. It was the most frightening time of our lives, and one I will never forget.

At the time, we had never even heard of Group B Strep.

Now Hettie is four years old — happy, funny, full of life and absolutely thriving — and I know how incredibly lucky we are to be able to say that. But not every family gets that outcome. Some lose their babies. Some watch their children survive with life-changing disabilities. And many have never even been told what Group B Strep is until it turns their world upside down.

That is why I’m running.

Two years ago, my husband and I ran the Leeds Marathon to raise money for Group B Strep Support after everything our family had been through. This time, I’m taking on the London Marathon with an official charity place, and I’m hoping to raise at least £3,000 to support the charity’s lifesaving work.

Group B Strep Support works tirelessly to raise awareness, support families, educate healthcare professionals and campaign for better prevention of Group B Strep infections. Their work helps save babies’ lives and supports families through some of the darkest moments imaginable.

Training for 26.2 miles will be tough, but it is nothing compared with what so many babies and families affected by Group B Strep go through. I’m running for Hettie, for the families who didn’t get the ending we did, and for the babies whose lives could still be saved through better awareness and prevention.

Why Group B Strep matters

Group B Strep is the UK’s most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies and the leading cause of meningitis in babies under three months old.

In the UK, on average:

- 2 babies a day develop a Group B Strep infection

- 1 baby a week dies from a Group B Strep infection

- 1 baby a week survives with long-term disabilities

Many of these infections are preventable through greater awareness, testing and treatment.
