In 3 weeks time I will be taking on the biggest Triathlon event in the world in our very own London covering a 1.5km swim / 40k bike and 10k run and want to take this opportunity to raise some money for a charity very close to my heart.
In 2016, my then 7 year old son Conall was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer, resulting in amputation of his right leg below the knee. Despite 14 grueling rounds of chemo and over a dozen operations with subsequent life changing consequences, the weekend of the Triathlon will mark Con being 2 and a half years in remission.
During that time, Con has had numerous challenges, not least learning to walk again but thanks to a wonderful local charity - The Aaron Lewis Foundation, Con also learnt to ride a bike again - beginning with a hand-cranked, battery powered wheelchair bike funded by the ALF, which boosted his confidence, his freedom and resulted in him eventually getting back to riding a normal bike.
Con has since gone on to complete a para-triathlon, a 10k bike race and only last week was awarded runner-up trainee of the year in the 2019 National Bikability Awards for his determination to get back on 2 wheels.
He now regularly does what any normal 11 year old should be doing - riding to school with his mates! He's returned to a new version of normal and thanks to the ALF, learning to ride a bike again has played a big part in that - something that we will be forever grateful for.
The Aaron Lewis Foundation is an all-volunteer charity set up in memory of Lieutenant Aaron Lewis and is committed to transforming lives through sport and community action in the local area and nationally for service and ex-service personnel.
