Jim's 2018 Antarctic Ice Marathon

Antarctic Ice Marathon 2018 · 13 December 2018
On November 18th, I was very fortunate to experience the healthy birth of my third child and second daughter, Indigo. During the entire pregnancy, I have been training for the Antarctic Ice Marathon on December 13th (next week!).
I didn't plan on running the marathon for any particular purpose other than achieving a personal goal. However, having recently reflected on how lucky we as a family are to have had three healthy, full-term pregnancies, I've decided to make this run more purposeful. The joy of a healthy birth puts in perspective how difficult a preterm birth can be for a family. Therefore, I'd like to do my part in helping to support the mitigation of this through raising funds for a charity that focuses on understanding the factors that ultimately lead to prematurity.
I will be running to raise funds for the Preterm Birth Research program at Imperial College in London. Preterm birth is globally the largest cause of death of children under the age of five. The causes of preterm delivery are not well understood and the rates of preterm birth are not falling. The marathon will be a gruelling event but any support I can provide to such a cause will give me very welcome extra motivation to complete the race!
