Berlin Marathon 2014 · 28 September 2014 ·

The RHN cares for people who have brain damage or a disease affecting their brain. People come to the RHN for many reasons, from a stroke to a traffic accident, or a disease. The RHN provides services and therapies to ensure people with neuro-disability can have the best quality of life possible.

Story

On Sunday 28th September  Andrew Haddow and Jim McGlone, two pillars of the athletic echelons, will be devouring the Berlin Marathon.  With guaranteed coverage in Das Local Berlin (we have a pre-race interview with the editor on Saturday) and significant hype following our Buckinghamshire training camp, the media frenzy is fizzing and the anticipation is palpable.

More importantly… we're running to raise money for the Royal Hospital for Neuro-Disability in Putney.

As many of you know our brilliant friend Xander Bennett should have been running this with us. He collapsed during a training run eight weeks ago due to extreme exertional heat stroke and has been in intensive care since then. His physical recovery from a desperate place has been remarkable and with the help of some fantastic doctors and nurses, and the unwavering support from his family and friends he has managed to overcome obstacles way beyond the mere 26.2 miles that we will be facing this weekend.

The next phase on Xand's recovery will be a long term programme to redevelop some of his cognitive abilities. This will require an exceptional amount of specialist care.

The Royal Hospital for Neuro-Disability in Putney is one of the top institutions in the world that provides this sort of care. They make a profound difference to the lives of disabled adults with acquired brain injuries, as well as degenerative neurological conditions such as Huntington’s disease. They provide rehabilitation and long term care, through a balance of traditional practice, specialist therapies and life changing technologies, in order that people like Xander can enjoy the optimum possible quality of life and can continue to achieve their full human potential. The RHN is a charity, and relies on donations to keep their services going.

The work that The RHN do is fantastic and we urge you all to look at their website and then dig deep to show your support; both for the two least likely people to be in without a stein in hand, and for the legendary Xander Bennett, whose continued recovery we are all still cheering on.

Big thanks, Jim and Haddow
