At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

About Me

If you'd have told me a year ago that I would be running a half marathon in little over a year's time, I'd have probably laughed it off and congratulated you on finding your calling in life as a comedian. In an effort to enliven the mediocrity that is my life, I set myself a goal over summer to try and run a sub 45 minute 10K, small disclaimer: I used to hate running and oddly stumbled into the hobby around a month ago. Somehow the timing of this coincided with a friend's goal of completing a half marathon and, like the fool I am, I enthusiastically signed myself up thinking it would be a piece of cake. The gravity of the ordeal has only recently settled in as I started training, leading me to question my sanity and my rational decision making skills. However, this whole thing isn't a pity page about Jireh, it's about raising money for a noble and amazing cause, so there will be no more moping around on my part - at least until I start running. In all seriousness, I'm being terribly disingenuous and couldn't be more excited to see what can be achieved, and doing so whilst raising awareness and (hopefully) money for charity is a bonus.

The Cause

Alzheimer's Disease, commonly referred to as Alzheimer's, is a neurodegenerative disease affecting about 6% of people aged 65 years and older. It is the most common form of dementia and results in the progressive loss of brain function, due to the degeneration and death of neuron cells in the brain. There is currently no cure. The real tragedy of Alzheimer's is the way in which it gradually limits cognitive function and restricts one's independence. Imagine having trouble recalling the faces of your loved ones, or the distress you would feel if you struggled to complete a simple task such as working out how much money you needed to give at checkout - things we give little thought to in our day-to-day. Patients eventually become wholly dependent on others as they lose mobility and speech. This comes at a hefty physical, emotional and mental cost to caregivers.

Alzheimer's Society is a charity that offers support and advice to those suffering from Alzheimer's as well as those that care for, or live with them. They currently offer online, telephone and face-to-face consultancy for those who need it, from the point of diagnosis onward. They actively campaign for the rights of people with dementia, to ensure that their interests are protected and that they are treated equally in society. In addition, Alzheimer's Society funds research for this awful disease, contributing £50 million to the UK's first Dementia Research Institute, with a further £100 million going to other areas of research in prevention, care, and assistive technology. These funds enable researchers to get closer to understanding how Alzheimer's develops and progresses in order to identify targets which could lead to treatment or prevention.

I chose Alzheimer's Society because it baffles me how little we know about the way Alzheimer's works, and patients are just resigned to living with the condition with no hope of recovery. This charity is very efficient with its resources with 89p of every £1 being spent on directly improving the lives of those with dementia, so you can rest assured that any donations you make are in good hands. As our population ages, conditions such as dementia become increasingly prevalent and anything little we can do now will hopefully make a massive difference in years to come.

This is such a fantastic cause and I would really appreciate if you would join me in raising money and awareness for this charity. Anything as small as donating the cost of your next Starbucks coffee really makes a difference (minimum £2 donation), or alternatively consider donating £1 for every mile I am running (13 for those who don't feel like doing the maths). All contributions and well wishes are greatly appreciated, and even if you have nothing to give, please do share this page with others, and hopefully we can all accomplish something amazing together. If you want to watch me suffer and are into that kind of thing, then come along to shout abuse at me from the sidelines at the Royal Parks Half Marathon, taking place in London on October 14, 2018.
