It provides advice, information and suppot to Migrant Domestic Workers in the UK, whilst also campaigning with the workers to protect their rights. Migrant domestic workers are typically housekeepers and nannies who can be vulnerable to forced labour and exploitation due to their multiple dependencies on their employers.

Story

I'm making my running debut at the 2011 Reading Half Marathon on Sunday, 20th of March.  And, to make it all extra special, I'm raising funds for the charity called Kalayaan.

Over a year ago, I saw an episode of Dispatches, entitled Britain's Secret Slaves. Incidentally around the same time, I also came across a relevant article on the Sunday newspaper talking about domestic servitude and how helpless 'house maids' are physically, mentally and emotionally abused by their ultra-rich (and high profile!) employers. This is a greatly disturbing reality, but you can find out more about it on http://www.channel4.com/programmes/dispatches/4od#3129534

Based in London, Kalayaan protect and support these vulnerable women by making them aware of their rights and in extreme cases (such as domestic violence and physical abuse), helping find legal support to fight their case court.

Where I'm from, the word 'kalayaan' means 'freedom'.  Our donations will go a long way to support Kalayaan, a great charity that continues to give hope to oppressed and vulnerable women.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
