We’ve chosen to raise funds for Feedback for many reasons but in part to support the work that Sam has been doing there. Sam and Jo studied together and in 1998 were both selected as overseas training programme trainees and whilst Jo spent her year working in , Sam went to . After they completed their degrees, Sam returned to and has been there ever since. Jo was fortunate enough to spend a couple of months working with Sam in Madagascar carrying out research for a royal geographical sponsored expedition and was able to see first hand the inspiring work that Sam and her colleagues carry out on a day to day basis. The team is small and they all work tirelessly to provide better conditions for the poorest of the poor in . We can promise that every penny of the funds we raise for Feedback will benefit the people of . For further information on Feedback’s work please visit their website at www.feedbackmadagascar.org
In consultation with Feedback we have chosen to focus on raising funds for well drilling in order to provide clean water.
Appeal to provide clean water supplies to rural communities through well-drilling using the technology ‘rotasludge’
Diarrhoeal diseases are still one of the main killers of children under 5 years old in , and lack of access to clean water is one of the principal contributing factors. Feedback - Ny Tanintsika now has two teams trained and active in drilling wells using the low-cost technology ‘rotasludge’, and their installation with hand-pumps. Eleven wells have already been successfully drilled in the Ambalavao district this year, and installed with Canzee handpumps, and more are underway.
Tragically, however, Feedback's present funding (from USAID) has been suddenly cut this month (July 2009) due to the American government’s stand against the current Malagasy government. This is a huge blow for the other twenty communities who were expecting to benefit from the project over the next six months, and who had already prepared their community contributions. Funds are desperately needed to be able to continue with the work and keep our teams working. Each well costs on average £1,000.
The ‘rotasludge’ technology uses a manual rotating drilling movement to circulate water in the hole to bring earth up to the surface in the form of mud. It can be used up to a depth of 35 metres in areas where a feasibility study has been carried out.
