Story
What am I doing: I am cycling (fully self funded) from Vienna to Budapest; 230miles. I am thoroughly looking forward to the challenge (never been on a bike 2 days in a row or that distance), stepping outside my very happy comfort zone, meeting lots of new people and have a whole load of new experiences on my own. If any issues, I'll be fine as joining the team is Natalie's Kidney surgeon and several kidney nurses plus many kidney patients and transplant recipients.
Why am I doing it: I am raising funds to support Kidneys for Life who support current and future kidney patients including new research. My daughter, Natalie, suffered from an undiagnosed rare kidney disease, Nephronophthisis which is was discovered by being hit by a hammock in USA. She had a a very successful kidney transplant 7 years ago from her dad. The new kidney has allowed Natalie to thrive and live life as a normal teenager. But currently, a new kidney does not last for ever and I'm up next - so lets get funding more research to ensure that a new kidney is for life.
Kidney Disease is growing at an alarming rate and now 1 in 10 people is affected, this is only going to get worse as we put on weight and live longer. Whilst it is more likely to affect you when you get older, all ages are at risk and can develop kidney failure needing dialysis and possibly a kidney transplant.
