Story

In 1849 George, Mary, Harriett and Mary Henday Body, 14 years old, left South Hill, England and sailed to Australia on board the Steadfast to start a new life. In 1853 Mary Henday Body married John Bray and they had eight children and lived amongst the excitement of the goldfields in McCallum's Creek/Majorca then headed to Fitzroy, Melbourne. One of their children, Harriet Banfield Bray was our Great Grandmother. Harriet and husband Archibald Smith had three children and sadly both parents died young, leaving Esther, Sydney and Alice orphaned. Family ties were strong though and Harriet's sister, Alice and mother Mary Henday helped raise the children. Sydney Smith married Elizabeth George and our dad William John Smith was born into a family of six children. As a tribute to our stoic ancestors and father William John Smith who passed away 26/1/2021 aged 93, we value the links to our past, including those with St. Sampson's South Hill, Cornwall, England and particularly from such a vast distance away, here in Australia.

About the charity

St Sampson's Church is an amazing building in the small rural parish of South Hill. It holds a special place in the lives of many people and is in need of repairs and improvements The St Sampson's Unlocked project will preserve the heritage of the building and that of South Hill community, by making the building warm , dry , draught free and adding toilet and kitchen facilities. We want the community to use this building for many activities and events. It is a medieval grade 1 listed and has a wealth of fascinating history. There has been a Christian presence here for over a 1000 years. There is a memorial stone dated 500 AD. It is thought probable that St Sampson built a monastery here and Bishop Trelawny was rector here. Please help to keep this church thriving into the future.
