Vitality Reading Half Marathon 2017 · 19 March 2017 ·

Reading Samaritans are one of about 200 Samaritans branches across the UK and Ireland. Together, we provide a service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing emotional support to people experiencing distress or despair, including thoughts that may lead to suicide. Our service is confidential: we dont judge and we dont give advice. We do listen and provide human contact for people, some of whom may be in very great distress. We can be contacted by phone, email but unfortunately we are unable to receive callers in person at our branch. All our work is carried out by volunteers, but we still have a building to maintain and bills to pay: it costs us around £100 per day to keep running, and we are entirely dependent on donations. Every day our phone rings over 100 times. Your support will allow us to keep answering it. Thank you!

Story

Over the last few years it has become more apparent to me that the pressures of modern life are affecting more and more people.  One sad outcome has been the rise of suicide attempts. This has been covered a lot in newspapers, magazines and television programmes.

My New Year resolution was to challenge myself, also to help others. So, participating in the Reading Half Marathon is my first challenge for 2017. I really hope that you will help me to help this very important charity with its vital work and ensure The Samaritans always have someone on the end of a phone.
