We enable people with learning disabilities to challenge what they expect from life.

Story

I needed a new challenge and experience and this one gives me a chance to be part of a world I never really took the time to understand when I was a teenager. When my dad was 36 years old he was told he had the dry version of Macular Degeneration and that he would lose a lot of his sight and it was incurable. I was only four years old at the time and for 11 years he could see objects to a certain degree, but not detail. For example, he could not see my face features anymore. He was registered as blind, but the amazing thing is that when he died at only 47, his corneas were a part of his body that was donated.

As a photographer I rely on my sight for my profession and whilst I grew up watching dad learn brail, understand how to identify coins by touch and many other day to day things in life, I never really understood what it is like to not have full sight.

I love travel and to experience it from a completely different point of view as I guide fellow trekkers who are visually impaired through this trip, I feel is going to be amazing. As well as navigating the overload on the senses that is Marrakesh, we will be taking on the challenge of trekking up the highest mountain in the Atlas Mountains of North Africa.  Jbel (Mount) Toubkal stands at 4167 meters.

I am personally paying £750 myself to cover the trip expenses. On top of this I am committed to fundraising £700 so my target on here and hence all donations go directly to the charity See Ability.

The Mount Toubkal trekking challenge is being organised with Traveleyes and See Ability, two organisations that support those affected with sight loss, with all the fundraising going to See Ability.

“If you support SeeAbility you’re playing a hugely important role in helping them achieve their vision of inclusive communities where people with sight loss, autism, and learning disabilities participate as equal citizens.”

About the charity

SeeAbility provides ambitious social care for people with learning disabilities, autism and sight loss. We encourage them to challenge what they expect from life, from themselves and from wider society - and they in turn challenge us all to think about what’s possible, and to rethink disability.
