On the 13th September, I will be taking part in the Kiltwalk the mighty stride (21miles) to raise money for Deaf Action, an organisation that means a great deal to me personally.

Deaf Action has supported me in so many ways throughout my life. They have given me opportunities, support, experiences and, importantly, the chance to meet and connect with other Deaf people. It has helped me feel part of a community where I can be myself and share experiences with people who understand.

One of the things that makes Deaf Action especially important to me is the work they do with Deaf children and young people. When I was a teen, I attended Deaf Action camps myself and their youth club activities day outs. Those experiences gave me some amazing memories and opportunities that I will always carry with me.

Now, I have the opportunity to volunteer at camps yearly and helping out on the activities day outs to help give Deaf children the same kind of experience I was lucky enough to have. Seeing the children enjoying themselves, making friends, gaining confidence and simply being able to have fun in an environment where they feel understood is one of the greatest feelings.

It means a lot to me to be able to give back in this way. As they have done so much for Deaf community where they can be theirselves around others who experienced the same world of deafness.

That is why I’m taking on the 21-mile Kiltwalk. I want to raise money to help Deaf Action continue providing opportunities, support, camps and experiences for Deaf people especially the next generation.

I know how much these opportunities can mean because I experienced them myself and it is worth it.

I’m walking 21 miles to give back to an organisation that has given me so much, and to help make sure other Deaf people have the same opportunities I had.

Deaf Action’s work isn’t just about supporting Deaf children. They support Deaf people of all ages, as well as families who have a Deaf child or a Deaf family member. They provide support, opportunities and services that can make a real difference to people and their families as they navigate life as part of the Deaf community.
