Tamar Valley Discovery Trail Challenge · 11 July 2015

The charity has spent thirty years working throughout Devon and the South West to ensure that people with disabilities and Deaf people can live the life they choose. The charity was founded in 1990 by Peter Swain OBE following a life changing spinal injury. Run and led by disabled people, 71% of our Board of Trustees, 39% of our staff and approximately 89% of our volunteers are disabled or Deaf which means that we have lived experience of the issues facing disabled people. Annually, over 10,000 disabled and Deaf people, their families and carers, benefit from LOD services, including training, volunteering, outreach projects and accessible support services. It is a user-led organisation, meaning we have a first-hand understanding of the issues faced by disabled and Deaf people.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Living Options Devon is a user led charity who provide a wide range of services that support Deaf and disabled people. This year is their 25th Anniversary and they are organising a number of fundraising activities and events.

As you can imagine this type of charity is very close to my heart. Having a disabled son myself I know how important it is that charities like this are supported so that they in turn can support others.

Much of what Joe has achieved in his life to date has been as a result of charitable organisations. One example below.

Whilst living in Cornwall Joe was given the opportunity to access various outdoor activities (rock climbing, sailing, kayaking etc etc); much to my horror at first I must admit. Watching him scale a rock face and disappear over the top was one thing but being expected to follow was by far the most terrifying experience of my life.

It was however through these experiences that we realised not only how good Joe was at all this physical stuff but also how being active contributed to reducing his anxiety levels making his life altogether more bearable and even pleasurable.

The one activity that Joe particularly took to was kayaking. Now living in Paignton Joe is the proud owner of his own kayak and is fortunate to have an amazing kayak instructor as one of his care team.

So look out for him on the the waves of Paignton or down at the quay in Exeter. He will be the one lying back enjoying the scenery!

Seriously though without that chance down in Cornwall he may now be missing out on this very valuable experience.

This is why Steve and I have volunteered (although Steve may say volunteered is not quite the right word)  to support Joe to take part in the 15 mile walk around the Tamar Valley to try and raise some valuable funds whilst giving Joe a chance to do something really positive that he is good at and enjoys.

We would really appreciate any donations no matter how small.

All donations of plasters, Deep Heat and anti-inflammatories also welcome!

Wish us luck or better still come and join us!

Thank you.

Joe, Debbie and Steve.
