At the end of January 2010 we were told the devastating news that our beautiful son had Leukaemia, he was just 24 months old. Those were the words that were to turn our world upside down, and change our lives forever. Joe had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia and we were powerless to change this. His life would suddenly become very difficult and scary; 3 years and 6 months of tests, procedures, transfusions, chemotherapy, steroids, hair loss, pain and endless hospital stays.
Joe is 10 years old now and in remission, he finished maintenance chemotherapy in 2013. Despite all that he has been through, and spending much of his childhood in and out of hospital, he is a happy boy and takes everything in his stride. There were times that we thought we might of lost our boy, other times we have watched another innocent child lose their fight, those moments will haunt us for the rest of our lives.
Joe's bravery was the inspiration behind Team Joe, we want to raise as much money as possible for Bloodwise.
ALL is the only form of Leukaemia that is more common in children than adults. Around 85% of cases of childhood Leukaemia are ALL. The charity's life-saving research is focused on finding causes, improving diagnosis and treatments, and running groundbreaking clinical trials for all blood cancer patients. In 1960, when Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research was founded (now Bloodwise), a child diagnosed with leukaemia had almost no hope of survival. In 1985, only 20% of children survived the most common form of childhood leukaemia, now 90% survive this disease. But there are still children for whom the outlook is not so good and we need to make sure every child survives leukaemia, with 100% quality of life.
Thanks to the advances made in research over the last 50 years, nine out of ten children now survive the most common form of leukaemia, acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). We are all to aware that over 50 years ago, we would have lost our son if it had not been for the advances of medicine through research,, we hope that by raising further funds for this charity, we can contribute in helping them fulfil their vision to find a cure.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about our personal experiences about blood cancer, and our efforts to end it. The goal of this page is to increase blood cancer awareness, supporting the fighters, admiring the survivors, honour the taken and to raise money to help fund research into curing this deadly disease. Any support big or small will always be greatly appreciated.
