We’re riding for this great charity called Red Balloon. I don’t know if you’ve heard of it, but it supports children who are too frightened to go to school because of bullying, mental health problems or some other trauma in their lives. Without Red Balloon’s care, these children run the risk of dropping out on their education, missing their exams, becoming socially isolated at home, and failing to find their place in the adult world. Some even attempt suicide. 

Red Balloon provides education, wellbeing and therapeutic support so they can rebuild their self-esteem and self-confidence, resume their studies, take exams, make friends and reconnect with their communities. Most of all, they learn to trust again, be brave and plan for their futures. 

I was particularly struck by Lottie’s story on Red Balloon’s website. She was so badly bullied that she missed five months of school and developed severe anxiety. Following a period in hospital when Lottie was very unwell, her mother found Red Balloon. I’m pleased that Lottie went on to thrive and is now at college.
