Story

2020 was difficult for everyone due to the COVID pandemic. Charities were hit hard and their main source of revenue, the London Marathon was not able to run in its usual format. I was going to run the marathon in support of Action on Pre-Eclampsia (APEC) but couldn't. I have decided to attempt this again in 2021 and run the London Marathon in 2021 in aid of APEC. This is a charity that is close to my heart due to their unparalleled support and advocacy for the people whose lives have been or will be affected by the condition.

Thousands of women and babies worldwide become very ill or die as a result of this condition called pre-eclampsia, which affects up to 6% of pregnancies and the only cure is to deliver the baby.

Less than half of women diagnosed with pre-eclampsia have ever heard of the condition before and are often not aware of what symptoms to look out for in pregnancy. This can literally be the difference between life and death.

APEC run a helpline to support, educate and empower anyone affected by pre-eclampsia (pregnant women, their family and friends, and anyone worried about pre-eclampsia). They run healthcare professional training to improve clinical practices and support research on the prevention, detection and management of pre-eclampsia, and also facilitate a unique expert referral service, where women can be referred by their GPs to an expert on pre-eclampsia in their area. APEC also provide leaflets to hospitals and maternity units informing women about pre-eclampsia and the importance of antenatal care. They have kept up with all of this, despite the pandemic, but like all charities, have been hard hit by the pandemic.
