John and Allan's Abseil for Bowel Cancer UK · 9 October 2021

We’re the UK’s leading bowel cancer charity. We’re determined to save lives and improve the quality of life of everyone affected by bowel cancer. Our vision is a future where nobody dies of the disease.

Story

John was diagnosed with incurable and inoperable stage 4 bowel cancer in August 2019. Over the last two years he has had chemotherapy and radiotherapy on numerous occasions, but keeps smiling and buying silly tee shirts to wear to his hospital appointments.

John and Allan met over twenty years ago when Allan taught John to drive. This is evidence, if any were needed of Allan's ability to face enormous challenges and look fear straight in the eye. Allan abseiled down the Northampton Lift Tower back in 2017 which is what inspired John to organise this fundraiser.

At a staggering 418 feet or 127 meters, the National Lift Tower based in Northampton is now the largest abseil tower in the world. Taller than the Tower of Pisa, bigger than Big Ben and higher even than St Paul's Cathedral.

Oh and John is scared of heights.

The abseiling will take place on 9th October 2021. John and Allan have covered the cost for the event, so every single penny that you donate will go direct to Bowel Cancer UK.

Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK and the second biggest cancer killer.

Over 42,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year in the UK. Around 268,000 people living in the UK today have been diagnosed with bowel cancer.

More than nine out of ten new cases (94%) are diagnosed in people over the age of 50, and nearly six out of ten cases (59%) are diagnosed in people aged 70 or over. But bowel cancer can affect anyone of any age. More than 2,500 new cases are diagnosed each year in people under the age of 50.

Bowel Cancer UK is the country's leading bowel cancer charity. They  fund targeted research, provide expert information and support to patients and their families, educate the public and professionals about the disease and campaign for early diagnosis and access to best treatment and care. They are here to stop people dying of bowel cancer.
