John Deasy, assistant principal at St Benedict‘s Catholic College is facing the challenge of a lifetime as he gears up to cycle from Norcia, Italy, to mark St Benedict‘s 50th anniversary and to raise funds for its 50th year charity fund.
“I‘ve never cycled this far before,” says John. “The aim of this cycle ride is to celebrate St Benedict‘s College‘s links with Norcia, Italy, and to raise as much money as possible for St Benedict‘s 50th year charity fund.”
Mr Deasy says, “I hope to cover the distance of 1,600 miles in 16 days. Preparation for this challenge started way back in October, with much of the training being done in the gym due to the long, cold winter and spring. It‘s such a relief to be able to hit the road at last in preparation for the mountainous terrain that lies ahead.
The journey starts in the heart of the Apennine mountains at Norcia, St Benedict‘s birthplace. The first half of the journey will be spent mainly in mountainous regions cycling through Terni, Siena, Pisa, Genoa, Nice and Sanremo.
I then will cross the border into France and endeavour to cycle through Fréjus, Valence, Dijon, Troyes, Soissons, and Bethune in northern France. The last leg of the cycle ride will involve a ferry across the channel and the final haul across the south east of England back to St Benedict‘s College.”
“The hard work will all be worthwhile if I succeed in raising money for St Benedict‘s 50th year charity fund. I‘m hoping that by making this effort, my friends, colleagues and local communities will sponsor me if they can," said John. "Even a few pounds will make a huge difference to the charity fund."
