Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In 2019, I will be running the Manchester (7 April), Liverpool (26 May), Hull (22 September), Yorkshire 20 October) and Florence (24 November) Marathons in aid of the Prostate Cancer UK (also sometimes known as Men United) charity.

Prostate Cancer UK has a simple ambition – to stop men dying from prostate cancer. Through shifting science over the next 10 years to focus on radical improvements in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and support, they aim to stop prostate cancer being a killer. In 2014, 46,690 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed. That same year, 11,287 men died from the illness.

The charity is close to my heart, having had several close relatives affected by prostate cancer. I’ve written a piece on my blog explaining a little more about this, which can be found here:

https://whyirun.home.blog/2019/01/13/2019-the-year-of-4-marathons-for-prostate-cancer-uk/

The Prostate Cancer Charity was founded in 1996 by Professor Jonathan Waxman, and was the first national organisation for prostate cancer in the UK. Their aim was to improve the care and welfare of those affected by prostate cancer, increase investment in research, and raise public and political awareness of a long-neglected disease.

In 2012, they merged with Prostate Action and completely rebranded to form Prostate Cancer UK. In the last 20 years, they have invested over £37 million into ground breaking research, and continue to provide award-winning support for men. If you would like any more information about the charity, their website can be found at https://prostatecanceruk.org/
